Wall with three Japanese food posters: wasabi, wheat, and fugu

From Nature to Plate – Our First Poster Series

Food is a big deal for us. Not just eating it (even though we take that very seriously), but everything around it: how it’s made, how it looks, how it smells, where it comes from…
So we decided to pay tribute to the beauty of Japanese ingredients by creating our very first Japanese food poster series.

Each Japanese food art piece connects you with the story behind what you eat, on the street, in a restaurant, or in your own kitchen.

We called it: From Nature to Plate.

🧾 The story behind our first Japanese poster series

It’s simple. We wanted to reconnect food with where it comes from—its raw, natural form—and show how it ends up on our plates.

fresh wasabi plant growing in japan

Wasabi is a great example.
The real plant looks nothing like the little green paste you squeeze from a tube—and most people don’t even know what it looks like.
It’s a rare and delicate root that grows slowly, in cold mountain streams, and needs very specific conditions to survive.

Wheat may seem more common, but that’s exactly why we chose it.
It’s part of everyday life all over the world—including Japan. We liked the idea of noodles being the natural continuation of wheat straws.
It’s a quiet essential in Japanese cuisine—tempura, udon, ramen, even panko coating—all rooted in wheat.

And Fugu?
Well… its cute and strange little face flows naturally into the blue plate, revealing its white, translucent flesh.
It’s a fish that requires a certified chef to be served safely—both feared and admired, it carries centuries of culinary tradition in Japan.

So we made 3 posters:

  • Wasabi – Spicy and sneaky
  • Wheat – Simple, universal, essential
  • Fugu – Cute, deadly, delicious (if prepared right)

Each one is drawn with their iconic dual colors in mind—highlighting the contrast between nature and the final form on our plates or tables. Each poster is printed on premium 200gsm matte paper that adds texture and brings the artwork to life.

🍜 Why we started with Japanese ingredients?

Because food is culture.
Because it connects people.
Because every time we travel in Japan, we end up talking about what we ate.
And because… starting with food just felt like the most Otsukatsu thing to do.
(You can read more about the meaning of our name soon)

This series is also a way for us to show how much we love the little things: the colors, the textures, the hidden meanings. Whether it’s a weird plant growing in the mountains, a golden wheat field, or a fish that needs a certified chef to avoid poisoning you—there’s beauty in the details.

And if you ever host a takoyaki party, don’t forget to add a bit of wasabi into a few, mix them with the others… and the surprise is ready! Whoever eats one loses! I have done it a few times — always gets a good laugh!
