Behind the design
Behind the design
What are the objects associated with this Daruma?
- His arms and legs: legend claims his nine-year meditation was so intense that he never moved, leading to them falling off
- A tortoise representing 10,000 years of longevity
- A crane symbolizing longevity as well
- The flames: once your goal is reached you can burn the Daruma in a shrine, it is the end of its life
Is this an original artwork or traditional design?
- It is an original artwork, we have created every single detail to make it unique
- It is of course inspired by all the Daruma we have met during our travels :)
What do the facial hair patterns represent?
- The moustache is said to be shaped as the tortoise shell
- The eyebrows are shaped to recall the crane
Why this red color?
- The red color symbolizes good luck or good fortune
- It is also said that it is because of the red robe of Bodhidharma
What does the Japanese character mean?
- The most frequently used kanji painted on Daruma dolls' bellies. It commonly appears as "福入" (Fukuiri) which translates to "fortune contained within" or "luck brought in"
- This golden kanji serves as a visual blessing, representing the idea that the Daruma itself holds good fortune ready to be released when your goal is achieved
The Story of Our Daruma Collection
The Story of Our Daruma Collection
What is a daruma?
- A daruma is a rounded papier-mâché figure modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism
- In Japanese culture, this doll serves as a lucky charm, where one eye is colored in when setting a goal, and the other when the goal is achieved
- It stands as a symbol embodying persistence and resilience
Why are there four objects beneath each daruma?
- Each of the four objects reflects an essential trait, memory, or treasured aspect of the daruma's character
- These objects give a quick glimpse into its identity and its story
What is the story behind this series?
- This series respects the traditional daruma look
- We wanted to give it an intense and piercing gaze, and strangely it makes you want to stare at it
- We introduce pop-culture variations to make the daruma playful while preserving its deeper significance
- We like to think that the collection could serve as a cultural bridge, inviting anime and pop culture fans to explore Japanese daruma's rich history and spiritual meaning
How are the objects chosen?
- We pick objects that express the unique personality of each character
- When we see these objects, we should instantaneously guess who the daruma is
- They also reflect our personal bond with the characters, so maybe your objects could be slightly different (then let us know)
What special touches did we add to this series?
- The 30×40cm poster sacrifices our logo for pure design harmony, we chose art over branding :)
- The eyebrows are shaped like cranes (more hidden symbols can be discovered on the Classical Daruma page)
- We crafted a special texture throughout the design that echoes the traditional papier-mâché feel of real daruma dolls
