Our poster dedicated to the yakuza film genre is called Yakuza Eiga. It brings together powerful scenes from films spanning four decades of the Japanese gangster actions.

We took a very long time to make this incredible detailed illustration so we hope you will love it as much as we do.

You can spot Takeshi Kitano, Nao Omori or Jun Kunimura somewhere among so many other fabulous actors. Let us know if you spot yours or your favorite film somewhere on the poster!

Behind the design

What makes this yakuza film genre design visually distinctive?

  • The collage of the intertwined scenes makes it particularly unique, especially for this Japanese gangster movies
  • Each scene represents different facets of yakuza storytelling, brutal realism, stylized violence, Japanese underworld moments, ruthless expressions…
  • The blue and black colors capture the essence of darkness in the world of crime and evoke the colors of yakuza tattoos like ink carrying hidden stories beneath the skin
  • The red title echoes the blood, power and violence

What films are featured from this Japanese crime syndicate films collection?

  • The composition incorporates imagery from Japan's golden era of yakuza cinema spanning the 1960s-1980s and from the modern period
  • Tokyo Drifter (Seijun Suzuki, 1966)
  • Branded to Kill (Seijun Suzuki, 1967)
  • Cops vs. Thugs (Kinji Fukasaku, 1975)
  • Sonatine (Takeshi Kitano, 1993)
  • Many other films also have their place on this design, and we leave you the pleasure of finding them

How does the design adapt across different poster sizes?

  • As all of our design, it was originally created for the 70x100cm format to showcase all the intricate details and character compositions
  • For the 30x40cm and 50x70cm sizes, some peripheral content is cropped to maintain the central focus and visual impact
  • The main character portraits and key design elements remain clearly visible across all sizes
  • Smaller formats emphasize the most recognizable faces and scenes from the assemblage

Is this too violent-looking for a living room?

  • Even though this poster is about yakuza movies, there are no scenes of actual violence or intensely graphic moments so it is safe to display anywhere
  • The design focuses on character portraits and atmospheric elements rather than explicit violent content
  • As the tolerance of each person is specific, please explore the artwork to make sure there is nothing shocking for you

Making-of of this theme

What does "Eiga no janru" mean?

  • Eiga no janru means "film genre" in Japanese (Eiga 映画 means film and janru is literally the word genre in katakana writing: ジャンル)
  • We chose a Japanese title because this collection celebrates Japanese cinema

What is the core idea behind the "Eiga no janru" posters?

  • Each poster captures the essence of a Japanese film genre by combining many movie scenes into one artwork
  • Instead of featuring just one film, we create an artistic collage with distinctive colors that define, for us, the entire genre
  • Every scene is carefully cut and assembled so characters can have a new perspective
  • The vertical title in the center acts as the spine of the composition

How are films and scenes selected in each collage?

  • We research each genre extensively and it comes from the thousands of hours spent in cinema and on our sofa watching movies
  • Some scenes are chosen because they are iconic or because we find them fun, dramatic or because they perfectly capture a feeling or visual style that defines the genre
  • Every element has to earn its place in the composition so we can make the best Japanese movie collage artworks

How long did this take to create and how did you make this?

  • As said before, each poster takes weeks of research, selection, cutting, and assembly
  • We cut scenes into shapes that make visual sense, then layer them in the perfect orientation
  • It is by far the most time we have ever spent on a single design

Which films are included?

  • We do not list every film because discovery is part of the experience
  • We might share more about the films on our social networks
  • We love when you reach out to tell us you spotted your favorite film ;)

Can we expect hidden references or easter eggs to discover?

  • Absolutely, the posters reward closer inspection
  • This is what we love the most about this series: the more you look, the more you discover
  • It's meant to be an ongoing conversation between the designed artwork and the viewer

How many genres are in this ongoing series, and will more be added over time?

  • Currently we have three: Yakuza Eiga, Pinku Eiga, and Mecha Anime
  • We released recently these posters in a vintage look
  • If this series finds its public, then we might ask you what could be the next genre of Japanese cinema posters you want to see

Do I need to know these movies to appreciate the poster?

  • Not at all, each illustration works as a standalone piece of art
  • Film knowledge adds layers of enjoyment but isn't required
  • The compositions are designed to be visually compelling regardless
  • Think of it as an introduction to these genres as much as a celebration of them
